WebFungal interactions with grasses can be pathogenic or symbiotic. Herbivorous mammals, insects, other grassland animals, and fungal pathogens are known to play important roles in maintaining the biomass and biodiversity of grasslands. WebBiotrophic fungi are often obligate pathogens growing within living plant cells, and typically have narrow host ranges. Necrotrophs often use toxins, cell-wall-degrading enzymes, and ROS to promote disease and macerate plant tissues. Some pathogens exhibit both types of nutrition, switching from biotrophic to necrotrophic growth.
