So the top of the bell housing will be all grimy. Mine had that as well, but I've recently replaced my valve cover gaskets, so I'll be checking the intake gaskets too. If you're installing a 2-piece seal, here's what you need to do; -Remove the oil pan and oil pump. -Loosen all main bearing caps allowing the crankshaft to lower slightly. (The crankshaft should not be allowed to drop more than 1/32 inch.)
